Has Nancy Kline been referenced in training at work? Have you read Time to Think?

Do friends and colleagues tell you they are better listeners after doing a course or reading a Nancy Kline book?

Would you like to know more about her ground-breaking work?

red10 ‘s Lisa Smith recently completed a Time to Think Foundation Course and wishes she had done it 25 years ago – you can find out why here:

Nancy Kline – who is she?

She is the founder and president of ‘Time to Think’, a leadership development and coaching company, specialising in a process called ‘The Thinking Environment’.

What is The Thinking Environment?

Nancy says:

The most valuable thing we can offer each other is the framework in which to think for ourselves.

In essence, her courses teach people how to produce independent thinking at work and at home.

On the surface, that might sound simple. You may think or assume you are already a good thinker and listener – I did. But when you delve into this approach and experience a truly authentic Thinking Environment, as a thinker and a listener, you realise how easy it is to limit, or be limited in conversations.

That limitation stifles creativity, fresh thinking and space for new approaches and patterns.

What’s does Time to Think involve?

The Time To Think courses teach you The Ten Components which are very useful individually, and transformative when they are all in place. They are:

  • 1

Attention – Listening without interruption and with interest.

  • 2

Equality – Regarding each other as thinking peers, giving equal time to think, whatever your position or role.

  • 3

    Ease – Discarding internal urgency.

  • 4

Appreciation – Noticing what is good and saying it.

  • 5
Encouragement – Giving courage to go to the unexplored edge of thinking.
  • 6
Feelings – Welcoming the release of emotion, rather than hiding it.
  • 7
Information – Absorbing all the relevant facts.
  • 8
Difference – Committing to freedom from untrue assumptions.
  • 9
Incisive Questions – Freeing the human mind of untrue assumptions.
  • 10
Place – Producing a physical environment that says, ‘You matter’.

Time to Think teaches people how to create a Thinking Environment, using these Ten Components, so that everyone at every level can think independently.

Nancy believes:

The quality of everything we do depends on the quality of the thinking we do first. The quality of our thinking depends on the way we treat each other while we are thinking.

How has the course helped me?

Firstly, I should say I am late to the party with this one. Many of my colleagues at red10 trained with Nancy years ago, and it underpins the ethos and style of everything we offer. It works, and with hindsight I realise it is something which attracted me to working in this team almost six years ago. red10 walks the walk.

Personally, since the course, I have become acutely aware of not interrupting, giving people beautiful attention when they are talking, and showing my appreciation. I am actively practising three of the components.
