Assertive Communication - 1 day

We all encounter situations where we need to communicate in a clear, open, adult way - in other words, assertively - with colleagues, bosses, staff members and family and friends too. Yet it is often the very people we need to communicate most assertively with who ‘trigger' us into behaving aggressively or non-assertively. Our communication then suffers; our real meaning and intention gets lost and frequently we find ourselves feeling frustrated.

Communicating in an assertive way means being able to state clearly and straightforwardly what do and do not want whilst continuing to respect the needs and wants of others. Assertive communication leaves everyone's rights and self-esteem intact.

This workshop offers delegates a range of tools and methodologies which they can call on to help them become an effective, assertive communicator.

Key Objectives

To:

  • understand the difference between passive, aggressive and assertive behaviour and language
  • build awareness of preferred communication strategies
  • develop a range techniques for communicating assertively in challenging situations at work and at home e.g. saying ‘No', asking for what we want
  • practice using techniques applicable to delegates' real situations to develop new communication strategies
