How did you first get into coaching?
By picking up a copy of Coaching at Work and thinking ‘this looks like fun'. Having spent hundreds of hours working as a therapist using CBT, systems theory and NLP, I was attracted to the new possibilities of coaching people in the different context of work. How would you describe your coaching approach?
It's about expanding the mindset of another person through the power of deep listening, reflecting, and appropriate challenge, so they grow their thinking and choices in a way they could never do by themselves. Also, it's my job as a coach to have an effective toolkit of up-to-date knowledge and techniques to support my clients to find their own answers.
What are your areas of specialism?
I don't ‘do' therapy in the workplace, but I believe that work and home life are inextricably interlinked, so I am comfortable coaching clients on work issues at a deeper level, if they wish. I also enjoy Pairs Coaching, which enables two clients to build a better working relationship together.
What kinds of people in what roles have you coached before?
Partners, directors and senior managers in organisations ranging from financial services to media, property consultancy and law.
‘Val's coaching supported me through a major reorganisation at work and helped me to achieve tangible goals. She created a safe space and an unobtrusive structure to facilitate my creative thinking. I was able to focus on my future, against a backdrop of huge change, and move into a new job, having had the opportunity to explore deeply what motivates me and how I work best. Val's coaching is easy, natural and highly accomplished. She made a very positive difference to my work life.'
