Steve Thomson
Based in the Aberdeen area of Scotland, Steve Thomson is extremely passionate about leadership and personal development.....
How did you first get into coaching?
I attended a leadership development course while working in a pharmaceutical company 8 years ago. The training consultancy running the course suggested I join them, and after receiving follow-up coaching after the programme, decided that I did have some talent in this area - and elected to become a professional coach.
How would you describe your coaching approach?
I like to use a flexible, intuitive approach when coaching. Although I have plenty of ideas and a toolkit, if it is really the clients agenda - how can a coach be overly prescriptive about what's going to be raised? Empathy and challenge in equal measure perhaps!
What are your areas of specialism?
I have an international racket sports background, so like to use the parallels between sport and business, as well as providing life coaching and psychology to sportspeople. Further along the spectrum, I like to work in the area of emotional intelligence and bringing a more spiritual approach to workplace challenges.
What do you enjoy about coaching?
I enjoy supporting people to achieve more of their potential. I find it rewarding, fascinating, interesting, and it allows me a vehicle to express a variety of people skills, which feels like a very purposeful activity for me.
Time just flies during a coaching session!
What kinds of people in what roles have you coached before?
A long time ago I came from an engineering and production management background - so I often find myself introducing people skills to those with a more task-focussed preference. As well as this, I have successfully worked with many senior managers in a corporate setting, with a variety of different personality types.
"When I first met Steve, I was intensely frustrated by my inability to progress in a positive way. I was confused and lacked direction.
Within the first few sessions of working with Steve, he had provided clarity and focus, heightened my self-awareness and given me tools and skills to use that I always felt were out there but just not within my reach.
As a result, I feel more positive and confident about life, my colleagues and family appreciate the transformation and I am genuinely excited again about my own abilities and development. I would recommend him wholeheartedly to anyone genuinely seeking to improve themselves in any sphere of life.
