See Joan's full biography>How did you first get into coaching?
I first got into coaching by being coached 15 years ago. I was at a critical crossroads where I needed to recreate my life almost from scratch. Coaching literally transformed my life for the better, such that I wanted to help others do the same. (In those earlier days if I said I was a coach people thought I taught tennis.)
How would you describe your coaching approach?
I would describe my coaching approach as 'hands off.' I am devoted to the idea that the brain that contains the problem contains the solution. If I can elicit from my client what she/he already knows and help them to recognise their own intelligence, effectiveness, and solutions, then my job is done.
What are your areas of specialism?
My areas of specialism are helping people to become more confident by thinking for themselves and taking action; encouraging them to understand the power of optimism by removing limiting assumptions; and using the practical power of the transition framework to manage tough situations and constant change.
What do you enjoy about coaching?
What I love about coaching is my role as catalyst which enables my clients to do their own learning and growing. An added bonus is that I also get to learn and grow with them, and that neither of us knows where the session will lead us. I greatly enjoy the look on their faces when they reach their goals. I also love the appreciation they give me when they have succeeded.
What kinds of people in what roles have you coached before?
I have coached a huge variety of people but mostly very senior executives in corporate roles including Chairmen, Chief Executive Officers, Finance Directors, Managing Directors, Senior Partners in Law firms, Headhunters, Entrepreneurs in International business . I have also coached young people who are just starting out. Sectors have included Finance, Banking, Insurance, Manufacturing, Retail, Healthcare, IT, Public Services.
'Joan is an incredible coach - warm and empathic, but also very practical and focused. She was able to challenge my thinking and helped me to clarify exactly what it was I wanted to do and how I should get there Joan undoubtedly played an invaluable role in my career development. I cannot recommend her highly enough.'
